What to look at beyond the points

Points tell you what happened, not how likely it was. Putting actual points beside expected points (xPts) — what a team would have collected if every match had finished the way the chances created and conceded suggested — shows who is running above their performance and who is running below it.

  • Running above expectation: Juventus, 14.5 points more than their performances suggest.
  • Running below expectation: Cagliari, 19.3 points fewer than their performances suggest.

A wide gap tends to narrow as the season goes on, but this is not a forecast: it marks where results and performances disagree.

Frequently asked questions

How often is the table updated?

After every match. Results are picked up within minutes of the final whistle and the table recalculates itself.

How many teams are in Serie A?

Twenty, across 38 matchdays: every team plays every other team home and away.

What are expected points (xPts)?

An estimate of how many points a team would have taken if every match had finished the way its expected goals suggested — that is, the quality of the chances created and conceded. They separate performance from luck.

Why is there no xPts table for some past seasons?

Because it needs per-match expected goals, and a few seasons have none from our source. Where the data is missing we would rather show nothing than show an invented estimate.

How to read the table

Each row is a team, ordered by points. A win is worth three points, a draw one, a defeat none. MP is matches played, W D L are wins, draws and defeats, GF and GA are goals scored and conceded, and GD is the difference between them. The Form column shows recent results, oldest first.

What happens when teams are level on points

Serie A does not start from goal difference, as the Premier League and Bundesliga do. It looks at the head-to-head record first, and that often changes the final order:

  1. Points taken in the matches between the tied teams
  2. Goal difference in those matches
  3. Overall goal difference
  4. Goals scored across the season

When more than two teams are level, a mini-table is drawn up — the classifica avulsa — counting only the matches they played against each other.

For the title and for relegation, a tie is not settled on paper: a play-off is played. The title decider is a single match at the better-placed team's ground, and if it is still level it goes straight to penalties.
